United Colors
Fall 2016

As a group of highly individual and different beings, we have more in common than we have things that separate us. Examples of symbolic and color “emblems” exist in every culture, ethnic group, social organization, etc. This final problem is an exploration of the self, placed within the context of the public. The motifs and colors share many cultural references. A viewer may see not only Chinese patterns, but also Inuit and Native American tradition, such as the diamond shape in red and brown. The use of material is very simple but also very sophisticated. The eye is fooled to believe that the composition is woven when it is actually painted and cut. It is the same as John Berger mentioned in Ways of Seeing: "The relation between what we see and what we know is never settled.”

The personal seal is the most important thing in ancient China. At the middle of the scroll, the traditional personal seal shows the indentity of myself.

The hanging scroll has a container that was created especially for this purpose. The form and method for closing the box is designed for holding the scroll. Both the container and the banner used the sealing method. The interior of the box is a series of black, white and red stripes, which are the same elements used in the scroll.
